Battlestar Galactica Easter Egg Hunt!

Ok everyone, time for a trivia challenge for all you die hard fans!

(And the winners get prizes!).

There is a band in Canada (based in Vancouver) known collectively as Big John Bates...of course in this case named after the band leader...the aforementioned Mr. Bates!

During the run of the show, the props master (a big fan of the band created a prop that included them) ...in this case a magazine (cover)...two sides (and yes I'm going to include those images)...that Kara Thrace was reading in one of the scenes.

12578048101?profile=originalFront Cover Prop

So here is the challenge...you have to find the scene where Kara aka Starbuck is holding that magazine!

It only appears in one short scene throughout the entire series (gives you an excellent reason to go back an re-watch everything)...

Ok, so you got the idea...so here are the rules of the game...once found, send an email to shawn@galacitcon.org naming the episode (if you can do a screen grab with that, all that better)...the three best times win.

12578049879?profile=originalBack Cover Prop

First Prize: 1 Big John Bates CD (or 12" Vinyl) your choice, 1 Big John Bates T-Shirt & 1 hour of free tattooing at Darkday Tattoo in Vancouver, BC!

(Special rules regarding the Tattoo...IF you don't live in the Pacific Northwest or don't plan on getting to Vancouver anytime soon, the prize is transferable, BUT you need a special password along with proper ID to claim it!)

It DOES occur to me that of course that next year Galacticon IV: Resurrection will be in full swing in Seattle, which is only a few hours from Vancouver...just a thought!

Second Prize: 1 Big John Bates CD (or 12" Vinyl)

Third Prize: 1 Big John Bates T-Shirt

Good Hunting!!!

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

July 9 is the Birthday of the Wizard of the Flight Deck, that Nugget Tormentor, he who can fix a Raptor or a rainy day with duct tape and a monkey wrench, that Abuser of all Pointy-Nosed Space Ship Drivers and owner of all the Vipers he just "loans" to them for missions: our very own CPO R.J. "Cueball" Beaton.

Known for his sunny disposition and love of pilots, he is always willing to give good advice, even to an unwilling recipient. It is always good to take his advice, since he has an irritating habit of being right all the time.

So Happy Birthday Chief! (I can call you Chief, right?) SO SAY WE ALL!

Spotlight on Kate Vernon

All will remember her portrayal of Ellen Tigh on the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica...not only as the mysteriously "found" wife of Colonel Saul Tigh but to also be revealed as number Five of the Final Five.

Kate took the part and gave Ellen her own unique path and imprinted herself upon the role, which made it so memorable.

Kate is the daughter of well known actor John Vernon, known among other roles and famous for his part at Dean Vernon Wormer in Animal House.

Kate has also appeared as Lorraine Prescott in Falcon Crest & Benny Hanson in Pretty in Pink.

Television roles also include parts on Who's the Boss?, L.A. Law, Nash Bridges, Star Trek: Voyager as well as Spike Lee's film Malcolm X.

She is also starring it the upcoming Star Trek: Axanar.

12578055663?profile=original

Shawn: Kate, what was your first Convention experience?

Kate: My very first Convention experience was DragonCon with the minority of the BSG cast. It was completely overwhelming as you can imagine. The show was at its peak and we were like rock stars!

We all had such a blast together, especially at the panels. Standing room only!

2000 people in the room, I've never experienced anything like that. There's nothing better than fan love!

Shawn: So it sounds like it went well?

Kate: Like I said, it was a blast!

Shawn: Would you say that was your best Con?

12578055868?profile=originalKate: Yes, for all that...

Shawn: How about the worst Con?

Kate: That was a Star Trek event in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Unfortunately I only sold 1 photo. When it's not your audience it's not your audience. Hopefully that will change with Axanar.

Shawn: How about the strangest, most unusual fan you've encountered?

Kate: Well, this one amazed me. I met this sweet young couple who had just had a baby girl and they named her Ellen after my character!

Shawn: Ever had a bad experience at a Con?

Kate: Nope, never had a bad experience.

Shawn: If you were running a Convention, what would you do differently?

Kate: Sure people can party and drink, but I would also provide fresh juice bars, oxygen bars and spa treatments. Raise the vibrational frequency. Serve only organic food!

Shawn: Have you ever wanted an autograph?

Kate: Angie Dickinson. My Dad did his first Hollywood movie with her...Point Blank which also starred Steve McQueen.

Shawn: What are you currently working on?

Kate: Well, just finished up filming Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar...

Shawn: So that is in  your future plans then?

Kate: Yes, hope to  start filming Axanar itself starting in October or November...

On the air with Battlestar Galactica

Recently I had a great talk with Scott Crisp, who has been hosting a call in radio segment known as Mr. Scott's Convention Corner for several years. He started out on the B.K. on the Radio show but with popularity growing he is moving to new digs with an expanded one hour event on a different affiliate...said new hosting spot to be announced soon.

12578056701?profile=originalIn the meantime you can check out Scott's Facebook Page here.

So, let's roll into the interview!

Shawn: First of all, what got you into doing a radio show in the first place?

Scott: Well, I started on the B.K. on the Radio Show which was the brain child of one of my longtime friends Barry King. He asked me to start a segment on the show doing movie reviews. Because of my involvement with several Sci-Fi Conventions the segment evolved into what is now Mr. Scott's Convention Connection.

Shawn: And you work with DragonCon as well?

Scott: Yes, I am part of the DragonCon social media team. Our 5 person team is directly responsible for all forms of social media, interaction between DragonCon and the fans on Facebook, Twitter etc.

Shawn: You had mentioned that you work with Garrett Wang (Star Trek: Voyager) on an ongoing project?

12578056895?profile=originalScott: That is correct. 5 years ago Garrett Wang too over as the director for Trek Track at DragonCon...as you mentioned, Garrett played Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager. He has been involved in several "fan films" and is very involved in several Conventions all over the world. Garrett asked me to help develop the social media side of the Trek Track. In addition to my love for Battlestar Galactica I am also a big fan of Star Trek (as well as Babylon 5).

Shawn: Let's talk about Battlestar Galactica now that you mentioned, where did that start for you?

Scott: I started watching what is now referred to as classic Battlestar Galactica in 1978. I loved the show. Later I watched Galactica: 1980 & that was really the introduction of Cylons who looked like humans. That, to me was both a great addition to that show and also represented a fear that aliens could take on the look of humans and walk among us. When the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica was released I certainly had to watch that as well.

Shawn: What Battlestar Galactica cast members had you done radio spots with?

12578051452?profile=originalScott: Richard Hatch has called in twice and we were able to do an onsite interview with Herb Jefferson Jr. during last years DragonCon.

12578052672?profile=originalWe would love to have Dirk Benedict on the show as well.

12578052055?profile=originalI spent five minutes with Edward James Olmos last year for a printed piece on the shows Facebook page. That was a real treat.

12578058074?profile=originalShawn: Other shows cast member interviews?

Scott: As you can imagined Garrett Wang has been on the show. We have also had several members of different "paranormal investigation" show on over the past 2 years.

Shawn: Anybody ever make you nervous going into an interview?

12578057874?profile=originalScott: I spent about 10 minutes with Lucy Lawless for a printed piece...just her beauty alone could make me nervous. George Takei could see I was a little nervous and he made the process very comfortable.

12578058856?profile=originalShawn: How was it that you came across the Battlestar Galactica Fan Club?

Scott: A few years ago at DragonCon I was walking around the fan tables and found myself having a long conversation  with the folks manning the Battlestar Galactica Fan Club table. I have been a member ever since!

Shawn: Well, as you know I'm moving to a new affiliate with an expanded one hour format...coming soon...so that's part of it and of course I will be covering DragonCon next month! As we push forward we will, I'm sure attract even more listeners and hopefully more guests to grace our airwaves.

Fellow Colonials,

Allow me to first wish you all a joyous Happy 4th of July this year.  This year has thus far has been full of joy for many here in the United States as well as for those in different countries around the globe.  It has also been full of challenges for many either facing harsh realities life brings.  Whether it is being unemployed,  Death in the Family,  Illness we have no control over,  an economy which shows no signs of changing for the better and the list goes on etc etc.  I know there are people everywhere who are having it bad.  However, I am reminded words spoken to me by a Guardian who always and continuous to look over me.  These words are and I quote, “Yes you are having it bad day or life has got you on the rocks.  Just remember and ALWAYS never forget there are persons out there who have it A LOT more worse then you.”  Such words are a constant reminder to me that nothing is free.  Even what may appear to be free may have a price not visible, but there in some form or another.

Which brings me to the FREEDOM we all cherish and at times unfortunately take for granted did come at a GREAT PRICE.  Our history has shown us over the course of time.  The Rights, Freedom and Independence we have were passed onto us by our Founding Fathers.  As we also acknowledge the different Wars in the name of Freedom and Independence where many fellow Americans gave their very lives to preserve.  It is a CONSTANT reminder to all of us we are indeed very FORTUNATE to live in this country.  While in others countries aboard Freedom is slim and at times fleeting.  We as a people continue to rise to the challenge to help people here at home and overseas anyway WE can as best WE can.  It is in the worst of times that we the HUMAN RACE are at our VERY BEST!  Please keep that close to the heart.

This 4th of July we HONOR our members of the Armed Forces.  Serving in the Army, Air force, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy.  These Brother and Sisters in uniform represent US ALL.  No matter where they are serving here at home or overseas.  We also HONOR those members who have served and are now Veterans.  We also pay HONOR, RESPECT and HOMAGE to Service members who have given their lives in the line of duty for our great country so we can still have the very freedoms we cherish.  Let’s not forget their families from who they all draw strength from when times are hard and they are alone.  These families are also making sacrifices we may not always see.

Please as a token of the highest respect if you see a Military Service Member take a moment to say thank you for their SERVICE.  Or shake their hand and say thank you.  While you are at it take time to thank a Fire Man, Police Officer, Doctor, Nurse, Teacher, EMS, etc.  They also were a UNIFORM and help us by keeping us safe and giving aid with no regard for their own safety.  You will be surprised that many of them are very humble and greatly appreciate our support and gratitude.  The duty they perform is never an easy one.  GOD BLESS you all and thank you reading this message.  Please post and share your thoughts here with US!
