Hi
I have been trying to make some Battlestar Galactica dog tags. I bought some online but they were plain on the back and were very heavy so I wasn't happy. I tried with paper and they were not too bad:

and I tried with copper:

and I liked them more (because of the nice sound when they jangle together) but when I tried to engrave them by hand they looked awful (really awful).
Has anyone here made a set and managed to get the design on a metal tag with reasonably available tools in the home (i.e. not their own engraving machine)? If so, please share how you did it.
Thanks in advance

Hi Reamer
Thanks for the offer. Viper Pilot is not my scene. Just the thought of it makes me dizzy! How do I look at your page?

Hi Reamer,
.docx is just the extension for Microsoft word (2010). If you have an older or newer version it should offer to convert it. If this is a problem I can upload another as a .doc file for the old version. I think that there are also free (open source)programs that can open word files as well. You will need to use the 'bring to front' and 'send to back' features of the drawing tools to access the text on the hexagons to change the name and serial number to your own choice.

I have one question for you Euclidelements. What software do you use to open the docx file to create the dog tags? I tried to download the file, but when I noticed it was a docx file I didn't bother. I tried to open docx files before without success.
Thanks
Hi Euclidselements,
Thanks for sharing the How-to make BSG Dog Tags. I'm not sure what type of metal was used to make the originals, but I'm sure the information is online someplace. One of my pilots showed me how to make the Viper Name plates (VNP). Since then, I've made them for all my pilots and other members of the Battlestar Raven's crew.
The frame of the VNP isn't exactly the same shape as the originals, but they look good enough to print and frame. If you give me your full name and the call sign of your choice, I'll make one for you. Take a look at my page to have a look.
SO SAY WE ALL! ! ! ! !
Debbie Bode seems to have a really good source for already made Battlestar Galactica tags.

Other than that, I've seem some limited results with thin metal squares and hacksawing the corners, but you have to "measure twice cut once." Good hunting!
