Could someone help me out with something that's been bugging me ever since I saw that episode where the raptors were leading the civilian ships through the radiation cloud? I still don't quite understand how that worked, and why visual sight on the ships was important.
Here's what I know: Since the civilian ships weren't able to calculate jump coordinates inside the radiation cloud, the raptors did that for them, and they relayed the coordinates to the civi ships they were paired with. Correct me if that's wrong.
Now here is the issue I'm having. As soon as a raptor pilot lost visual on the ship they were paired with, they acted as though the civi ship was lost to them and there was nothing they could do but look around and try to find it. Why did it matter if the pilot could see the other ship with a naked eye? Just because they didn't see the other ship didn't mean they couldn't send them the data. It's not like the radio signal range of the raptor is the same as visual range of the pilot. That would be beyond ridiculous, so there has to be another explanation.
Please help me understand this. Thank you!
