"ONE OF THE OLDEST IF NOT ALREADY THE OLDEST FAN CLUB ORGANIZATION FOR BATTLESTAR GALACTICA"

"There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive, somewhere beyond the heavens."

Is the original Battlestar Galactica a better ship than the reimagined battlestar?

Hmm. This might be an apples-to-oranges comparison.

For example, the Bucket could jump, whereas the TOS could only "come up to light speed," which was never fast enough to outrun their pursuers. Advantage: Bucket.

(But then again, the Bucket ultimately ruined itself from jumping.)

Conversely, the Bucket's guns relied on hard ammo that could run out, whereas the TOS turrets used the same plasma torpedoes as the vipers, which would (in theory) be charged by the engines, which require only tylium. i.e. one less resource to have to locate and stockpile. Both had missiles, I believe? Advantage: TOS.

But then you look at the ruggedness of each ship; the Bucket took a nuke and kept ticking without a major structural crisis (and that was largely without most of its hull armor, which had been stripped before the series began). The TOS, OTOH, takes a single fuel-laden raider to the landing bay and the ensuing fire damn near destroys the ship. And more importantly, indirectly led to shmushed mushies. Unforgiveable. Advantage: Bucket.

But wait, the TOS was supposed to be several centurons old, far older than the Bucket. So to last that long in constant Thousand Yahren war against the Cylons means that while it might not be able to take as big a hit, it was built to last several human lifetimes. It was sheer tactical error and treachery that cost the Fleet several battlestars at Cimtar. Advantage: TOS.

DRADIS versus long-range scanners? *shrugs* Advantage: TIE.

As for which was more effective in combat, I believe we've seen TOS battlestars take out three basestars during the run: two in Living Legend by the Pegasus (basically a TOS twin), and one by the TOS herself in Hand of God. I honestly do not recall the Bucket single-handedly taking out a basestar (I could very well be wrong about that), only that the Beast did and the Beast was not the same kind of ship as the Bucket.

So...yeah...I'm a TOS fan, so I'm giving the nod in this very close contest to TOS because I'm biased like that.

Good analysis,  Drake. I also prefer the original Galactica. Just a couple of points, whilst light speed was not defined in the original series,  it was apparently fast enough to traverse thousands of light years in less than a generation to find Earth by "1980".

Also long range scanners could well be "Dradis" without being named.

Thanks for your prompt response.

"whilst light speed was not defined in the original series"

Hmm. I only mentioned that because I could swear that I remember a line of dialog from "Hand of God" where Adama tells Tigh to bring the Galactica up to light speed when engaging the basestar, which only stuck in my head because of how silly the line is when you consider the science behind it.

The same line was used in the original film when Adama orders the Galactica to retreat to Caprica from the Cylon ambush.

i honestly can't compare the two because for me there is only one ship and that is the Galactica from the original series. i don't watch moore's stuff as i throw things when i do because to me it just isn't BSG.

That's ok Sandra, I also prefer the original Galactica. At least it is all in one piece.

Thanks for your comment.

I felt as you do for a very long time; I watched the mini-series out of curiosity, but was angry that the new BSG had replaced a large part of my childhood instead of complementing it. I then met Mr. Olmos at Galacticon a few years back and he asked me what I thought of the show; I had to tell him that I honestly had not seen most of it. He asked why not, and I responded that I was a fan of the older show and found the new one very jarring. He replied that I should give it a chance, that it was really very good, and just treat it as a standalone story instead of comparing the two.

I had to admit that he had a point, and so I committed to watching the new series as just a standalone sci-fi series that simply had some BSG-like content to it. And when I did that, I was forced to admit that it was pretty decent, although I did have some problems with the plot and honestly had a hard time being sympathetic towards many of the characters. But the acting was top notch, the effects superlative, and the storytelling above average. It was worth the watch.

i tried that too, david, and still couldn't do it. i admitted that to edward, niki, and richard at galacticon III in houston. we came to the agreement that i would like most anything else they were in but that. lol. it helped that i was a huge fan of miami vice with edward. as for niki, i hadn't seen any of her other work so i can go forward with a clean slate. richard and i were on a different footing as i was a fan of his from before BSG and his work after along with his writing. i did manage to watch razor all the way thru and hated it too. just couldn't see it as BSG at all and i couldn't even think of it as being in an alternate universe.  so i'll stick to the original, richard's works, some fan fics i've read, along with the hope that someone will do it justice someday since the powers that be won't let us to it ourselves.

I completely empathize with you, Sandra. I watched the new BSG, I'm glad I did, but I have no desire to go back and watch it again (except perhaps that one scene between Baltar and Tyrol where Baltar reveals his origins and lets his accent slip, which I still get goosebumps over). Whereas I can still go back and watch most episodes of TOS, even though it is showing its age and "made for family viewing" campy in places. (Coincidentally, the conversation between Mr. Olmos and myself started when I purchased an autographed Gaff photo and he was curious why nothing BSG.) I have nothing but respect for all fans of sci-fi, and I do not mean to disparage the new show, but it was not representative of what I grew up with.

Unfortunately, I think with Mr. Hatch's passing, the last of the old guard who was willing to fight for folks like us passed with him.

Yes and the original series is far and away a much better series than the new one.

The only thing from the re-imagined show I like better is the Mark II Viper.

Also, when you read the novelization of the original mini-series by Glen Larson it gives you a slightly different version of what ended up on the television.  There is talk of "hyper-space" travel.  In addition, there is an implication that the Galactica is alive.  In the final battle at Carrillon, Athena notices the Galactica responding much better since their flight from Caprica.  Athena believes that it is because they are taking the fight to the Cylons and no longer running.
